Color trends are brighter and better than ever, I love that in both of these spaces they really stuck to a color pallet. Vibrant green bathrooms with black and white checkered floors, and the green and white checkered ceiling with the green island it's almost to good to be true. I think it would feel like living in fairy tale all the time, as fat as I am concerned any dream can come true in a space like this.

The pendants in this kitchen have become wildly popular, I have seen them in spaces modern, country, industrial and traditional. There are many versions of pendants similar to this Hudson Valley one here, here and here. It's one of the most versitle and trendy pendants I know of on the market right now.

I recently came across this kitchen remodel, it is such a colorful, contemporary kitchen. I love the Tech Lighting track system they used. The pendant, in Amber, is one of our most popular pendants, but I really like the blue. One of my favorite things about this track is how versatile it is, it was a great solution for the slanted ceiling, the standoffs are hung at different heights so the track can hang even with the floor. They made a shape that works well with the space, so the light can be directed wherever it's needed. Another great thing about a system like this is you can add or subtract lights whenever you want.

Well I have to admit this is the first time I have seen an antler chandelier and really really liked it. I grew up spending a lot of time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where there are antlers all over the place. I never thought to incorporate antlers in a chic space, I thought they only existed in full on western atmospheres. Boy was I wrong, this clean, fresh space is beautiful.I love the navy and white with the antlers, it's the perfect combination of simplicity and spark!

Desire to Inspire featured this great bedroom and it made me think of the new Hinkley fixture we just got in the store for display. I am obsessing over the gold accents, this antique gold finish is incredible! What do you think about the mix-and-match table lamps on the dresser? I am not inclined to mix like that, the painted yellow lamp with the brass one. But it does make the room a little more interesting and eclectic. I think the overall effect is great, what do you think?

FAQ Answered: Low Voltage Lighting

There was a little debate going on here at the store about Low Voltage lighting and weather a low voltage systems use less energy or not. I am talking specifically about the Low Voltage track systems, recessed lighting and display lights.

Here is the thing, this is a BIG question that needs to be answered correctly, we have electricians who say that low voltage is saving consumers’ money, and it’s a good debate because you would think your transforming voltage from 120 volts down to 12 volts you would be using less energy, right?

I have always been told in the industry that power consumption is measured in wattage's not voltage. So whether or not your systems are low voltage or line voltage you only save energy by using less wattage.

A Watt is a unit of Power, and a Volt is electrical potential, these are the definitions VERY simplified according to the dictionary. We can get really technical if we want, but the most applicable information I can find that will really answer this question is from my Rocky Mountain Power Representative.
We are only charged for the wattage we consume, in kWh(kilowatts), not the voltage!

Here is a price summary from Rocky Mountain Power.

With that said if we use a 50 watt low voltage (12 volt) halogen bulb and a 50 watt line voltage halogen bulb (120 volt) you are using 50 watts of power and you are charged for the 50 watts of power you consume! The only way to save money on your energy bill is to use less wattage.

Now here is the part that may validate what some electricians are saying about low voltage light systems; most often Low Voltage fixtures use halogen or LED bulbs. Both halogen and LED are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, the industry standard.

Blow is the breakdown of energy efficiency for different types of bulbs compared to the industry standard incandescent light bulb:
-If you use 75watts of incandescent light you consume 75 watts of energy.

-If you use a 50 watt halogen bulb you are getting a light output equivalent to 75 watts of incandescent light.

-If you use a 20 watt CFL bulb you are getting the light output equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent bulb.

-A 9 watt LED bulb gives off light equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb.

I hope this helps answer some questions about Low vs. Line voltage lighting. I have found a few helpful articles and links about the differences in the light systems here and here. This article talks about halogen lighting, and this is a chart that show different bulbs and their efficiency.

It is not a secret that I love crystal chandeliers. I always have, and lucky for me they are really trendy right now. One thing I love about this trend is that it is timeless. Crystal has and will always be beautiful and glamorous. This is one trend you can participate in now and you know that without a doubt it will always be stylish.

I like how the chandeliers used here, in place of traditional pendants, are all different.

I can't get enough of that table top! I don't know what kind of stone it is, but all the different sized slabs of stone melded together makes it so interesting. The glossy table finish complements the crystal to make this otherwise dull kitchen a perfect combo of glitz and glam. I guess the gold candle sticks help too!?!

We are getting a big order of crystal chandeliers in for display soon! I can't wait to show you all the beauties coming in!

I was drawn to this kitchen because of the Forecast linear chandelier from the Fisher Island collection. I had not seen the Walnut Shade used before and I really like how SFA design used it in this kitchen. I also LOVE the pendants, I have featured similar ones many times on the blog, I love how over sized these ones from Quorum are. When the pendants are this large it's okay to use even numbers instead of odd numbers. (I think mini-pendants almost always look better when grouped in odd numbers) And last but not least I like that there is yellow in the kitchen, I don't see yellow in kitchens very often anymore and I really like it.

I saw this bathroom in the Residential Lighting Magazine this morning and I loved how Melissa Morgan Sutherland, who designed this bathroom, used lights I have all ready featured on the blog.
The Pendant in the center of the bathroom is from Justice Design, and the vertical lights running down the sides of the mirror are from George Kovacs.
This stunning bathroom I can see working in so many of the houses around this area where Arts and Crafts style is so prevalent. It could also work in many transitional homes or you can changed the finish to satin nickle or chrome and have a more modern feel.
I also LOVE that they used all halogen lights here, in the cans and in the vanity lighting. I have said many times that I think Halogen is needed in bathrooms, especially when you are going to be applying makeup and shaving. The halogen light is a brighter and more intense light that mimics sunlight, it is a much truer color than incandescent, LED or Fluorescent light. So in other words when you put your makeup on inside under halogen lights you will look the same color outside.

I received a display a few weeks ago with one of these LED recessed can retrofits from Nora Lighting. It is a great product, It is easily converted into an existing 4", 5" and 6" recessed can of there are new construction models available.

You save up to 75% energy, and it can dim better than any LED I've seen all the way down to 5%.

The retrofit is available in 2700K(warm white), 3500K(cool white), and 4000K(day light) and in either a baffle or a reflector trims(both shown above are reflector trims), and they are available in 7 different finishes.

This is a great rustic glam bathroom, they used the Hudson Valley Monroe sconce. I have to admit this sconce would not have been my first choice in this bathroom. It is more commonly a reading light, but it is really great in this particular application. Sometimes the unexpected turns out the best!

Tech World 20" Pendant

Okay the world is not going up in smoke but I do really love Techs new 20" World pendant in smoke, especially with those cool Edison bulbs in it. The amber pendant is not bad either! The texture in the glass gives off such a cool effect, it looks a little different from different angles, like the thing has a story to tell. It's also great that there is a 20" pendant, most of Techs pendants are much smaller. I can't think of a million cool applications where this world would make a great statement.

I saw photos this photo on Desire to Inspire today from David Woolley's portfolio. I was drawn to this dining area for a number of reasons. First I have had the Tech Mercer Suspension pendant on my mind lately because I have recently used this in a clients home. Second, I like the mounting in David Woolley's picture, how instead of mounting the canopies to the slopped ceiling a piece of wood or some other type of material was cut so the canopies would not be mounted on the slope. It's a common thing to do, but I haven't seen a good picture that shows this type of mounting for a while. Third, I love how the pendants are hung so close together that it almost looks like one fixture. And last I like that they used the rectangle rather than the traditional drum, I love the drums, don't get me wrong but it's refreshing to see a different shape.

The Dining room above is Tim Kaeding's, the designer and co-founder of Mother Jeans, he also worked with seven for all Mankind and Citizens of Humanity. His new line of denim, called Mother, has been flying off the shelves all over the country, but what I really love is his dining room! Isn't that table so incredible? And the glitz and glam of the pendant makes me want to jump for joy. The room is beautiful, and even though I couldn't find the exact fixture he used, ET2 make a similar one that I have had my eye on for some time.

It's not everyday that I can combine two of my favorite things into a lighting post- Make up and Lighting! Although it's a little silly really, to wear LED bulbs taped to your eyelids, it's such a cool idea. It just goes to show how versatile LED lights can be, if you can make them into an eyeshadow that only appears when your eyes are closed, you can surely come up with some useful applications for you home as well.

A huge trend right now when updating your kitchen is to use a track system. There are a lot of reasons people are drawn to this type of a system especially in a kitchen. A lot of kitchens in the area have the fluorescent lights 2' x 4' with the power coming out at any point under that big ugly box. With a monorail or ribbon track you can keep your power source wherever it is and run the power to a track. Track is versatile in that it can be various lengths and you can bend it to make a whole bunch of shapes. It can also hang really close to the ceiling, when you have height limitations, or you can suspend the system down, which is very useful with vaulted or really high ceilings. You also have complete control over how much light you run on the track. You can add or subtract lights whenever you feel like it.

I like the kitchen above, I have recently done two alley kitchens and updated fluorescent light to a monorail track system. George Kovacs track I have on this post is by far the best deal I have come across. It is a kit, so there is not as much room to determine the height or how much light you run, but for $181.50 you can't find a better deal with a good quality product. It comes with 10' of track and 5 track heads. It is also available in Bronze and there are a few different track heads you can choose from.

12V vs. 120V
12V or Low Voltage systems are generally more flexible and suitable for most residential environments while 120V or line voltage are more suited to permanent commercial and institutional applications.
Some of the advantages to the low voltage system are:
-You do not have to be a licensed electrician to install 12V systems.
-Wires are flexible and can be relocated during and after installation.
- Systems can be plugged into an existing outdoor receptacles.
- Wires and fixtures are designed for wet locations and are safe when exposed to moisture.

Types of Landscape Lighting:
UP LIGHTING, illuminating an object, area or surface from below, often used to illuminate trees.
DOWN LIGHTING, illuminating an object, area or surface from above, often used to spotlight sculptures or other points of interest.
MOONLIGHTING, a type of down lighting that is used to create a natural effect. Often the light will be mounted high in a tree and it bathes the ground with a soft glow.
GRAZING, emphasizes a textured surface (such and a tree trunk, stone wall, or climbing ivy) by placing a light source within one foot of that surface and aiming the light beam parallel to that surface.
PATH LIGHTING, used to enhance landscaping such as flower beds, shrubbery and borders while safely illuminating pathways.
STEP LIGHTING, may be used in masonry and wood construction to safely illuminate stairways and walkways.
WALL WASHING, illuminating a wall or a surface.
SILHOUETTING, aka back lighting, used to dramatize and interesting-shaped object.
SHADOWING, an effect created by placing a light source in front of an object and projecting a shadow onto a surface behind the object.
BENCH/DECK LIGHTING, used in masonry and wood construction used to provide safety and accent light.

When I see a room like this I imagine a movie star lounging on the chase drinking champagne and singing some lovely song to someone accompanying her on that beautiful piano.

Do's and Don't of Recessed Lighting

I have had a lot of inquires lately about how to lay out your recessed cans and what size cans are best to use. There seems to be a trend going toward smaller cans to light up entire rooms, one I cannot understand. In my opinion the recessed can is not for looks but for function. They can provide a great source of general illumination in a living space, and they are also great to highlight art or decor.

If you use smaller cans (like 3, 4 or 5-inch) to light up an entire room, you will need to use more cans, and I feel like using more cans creates a look similar to the DON'T picture shown here, it's like you’re looking at stars in a sky. The first problem with the DON'T picture is the layout. To make your cans less noticeable you should lay them out in a grid system, like the DO picture, when your can's are in a symmetrical grid layout you are less likely to pay any attention to them.

When you use 6" cans you most likely will place them every 3', the standard 6" can uses a R30 incandescent bulb or a PAR 30 Halogen bulb. When you use a PAR30 or R30 flood you get 40 degree beam of light. So if you have 9' ceilings with a 40 degree beam of light you will illuminate a space of 6.6-feet in diameter with light. If you use a 4" or 5" can with a PAR20 or R20 flood light you are only getting a 30 degree beam of light. So 9 feet from your light source you are covering a 4.8 feet diameter with light. So you will need to place these cans every 2-2.5' for even lighting.

So if you have a space that is 15' x 15' and you use only 6" cans to light up your space, for an ideal even lighting you would use 9 cans. For that same space if you use the 4" or 5" cans, with a PAR 20 Flood, you would need to use 20 cans to get the same even lighting. That means a lot of holes in your ceiling and a lot more money on the product.

There is an ideal time to use the smaller cans, like to spot light art on a wall or to highlight a workspace, like over your sink in the kitchen. But when you are lighting big living spaces I recommend using the 6" larger cans.

I have loved this wallpaper for a long time, I love the color scheme and the counter top and of course the lighting. I think it is great to stick with classic sconces when you have so much going on with the walls. Hudson Valley does a similar sconce, shown above, if you wan to recreate this look.

A few weeks ago I received a disturbing email about a CFL bulb, this is the first time I have heard of this happening with a bulb. Below the letter from my customer is a response I got from my light bulb Representative after I forwarded him this letter.
You can be sure that the TCP bulbs we sale will not have this problem. I want you all to be aware of this and I hope no one has this same thing happen to them.

Below is a picture of a CFL light bulb from my bathroom. I turned it on the other day and then smelled smoke after a few minutes. Four inch flames were spewing out of the side of the ballast like a blow torch! I immediately turned off the lights. But I'm sure it would have caused a fire if I was not right there. Imagine if the kids had left the lights on as usual when they were not in the room.
I took the bulb to the Fire Department to report the incident. The Fireman wasn't at all surprised and said that it was not an uncommon occurrence. Apparently, sometimes when the bulb burns out there is a chance that the ballast can start a fire. He told me that the Fire Marshall had issued reports about the dangers of these bulbs.

Upon doing some Internet research, it seems that bulbs made by “Globe” in China seem to have the lion’s share of problems. Lots of fires have been blamed on misuse of CFL bulbs, like using them in recessed lighting, pot lights, dimmers or in track lighting. Mine was installed in a normal light socket.

I bought these at Wal-Mart. I will be removing all the Globe bulbs from my house. CFL bulbs are a great energy saver but make sure you buy a name brand like Sylvania , Phillips or GE and not the ones from China .

RESPONSE:
we incorporated end of life circuit protection in all of our 489 series lamps. You pay more for them, but this will never happen with a TCP pro series lamp. And we are the only company that offers this feature at this time.
PS- Some Sylvania and Philips lamps are made by.....TCP. So much for household names.

FAQ Answered: How Much Light do I Need in a Room?

One of the questions we are asked on a regular basis is how much light do I need in a room?

There is a simple equation to use that will determine how much light will be sufficient:

Multiply the length x the width of the room in feet

then multiply it again 1.5 times

for example if your room is 12' in length x 16' in width

12 x 16 =192

192 x 1.5=288

So you would need approximately 288 watts of light to adequately illuminate the room!

(or if you are like me and enjoy well lit spaces just round up to 300 watts and use a dimmer, then you can always adjust the light level for your mood!)

This is a picture of J Crew's new bridal boutique in New York, I love the light fixture!!! Love it, in fact it is so similar to ET2's Cassini, the fixture we all love here in the showroom.

This is exactly what I want my living room to look like, well I think I will do dark hardwood floors- but still very close to what I imagine my living room to look like. I love to use recessed cans in the room and then add a design element as the focal point. It's a work of art hanging right in the middle for everyone to see, and very functional giving off great light.

This new LED tape is really something, I have seen endless applications where this double-sticky tape comes in handy. Under cabinet lighting is the most common use for the tape but as you can see in the pictures above it is great for other applications as well. The bulbs are available in red, green, blue, yellow, cool white, warm white and day light options.
It is the lowest profile lighting option I know of currently on the market. It is just like a piece of tape, you clean your surface and stick it where you wan the light, and for such a small unit it gives a surprisingly bright light output! Wow! Talk about statement lighting. The first three pictures are from Elie Saab's Paris apartment, and the last picture is from his home in Beirut. The aesthetic is different in the overall feel of the homes but the way he uses lights to make a statement is the same in both. I have to admit I have never seen such large tri-pod floor lamps in all my years in lighting, I love the reflection they make on the ceiling. The same lamp was used again in the bed room and the shade is the same, in a smaller version, over the bar area. I love taking a design element and carrying it throughout the house. Simply Stunning- I love every inch of what I see here! I hope you enjoy!

I got an email today on this Dream Home and wanted to share it with you. Designers in Chicago collaborated to make a temporary Dream home for the Merchandise Mart, the theme is Cool Elegance. Each space was done by a different designer/company. It is likely that buyers will be inspired by these rooms when they make their purchases. I of course can' t get enough of the chandeliers in the foyer and the Dining room, and the soft layered lighting in the bedroom is so calming and elegant!

I like the simple space with the crystal chandelier, and the modern floor lamp with such simple lines in the great room. The crystal table lamps in the bedroom are perfect too! I love how most of the walls are white with just one wall of color, but it's a subtle color in blue and green yet it really adds to the rooms and makes them more interesting. And with all that natural light it is so inviting!

This beautiful bathroom won Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle 21st Annual Bath Contest, I saw it this morning on House of Turquoise and wanted to share it with you. The table lamps are murano glass, from Italy, which goes along with the most recent Italian posts I have done. The crystal chandelier is so gorgeous in this setting! I love the use of colors the designer has used. I am such a huge fan of subway tiles in bathrooms, I think every bathroom I love has some of these same elements: clean lines, subway tiles, glamorous lighting, and space to lounge. Who wouldn't want to draw a bath in this luxurious space after a long day at work, it seems like the perfect sanctuary to me. I am very much in love with this bathroom!!!

I love the street lighting throughout Italy! I wanted to share some pictures with you! There is a mixture of old and new everywhere in Italy, especially in the lighting. Notice the very contemporary street poles in Rome (sorry the picture is not the best). In Venice and Florence I saw a lot of the multi-light posts, they are very beautiful! I heard a lot of them are solar powered, although I was not able to verify that information, they are beautiful either way.

While in Italy I was not able to get as many pictures of lighting and decor as I would have liked. Many of the places I visited asked that visitors do not take pictures, so for that reason I only have a few to share. While I was in Venice I got some pictures of Venetian glass chandeliers. The artistry is absolutely amazing and overwhelming. The top picture is my favorite they have used a ring of LED lights around the ceiling to help spotlight the chandelier, it's so cleaver. I have never seen that done before and it really made the chandelier sparkle! My two favorite lighting aspects of the trip were the venetian glass and the street lighting all throughout Italy. I have some pictures of street lights to share as well!

I like how refreshing this kitchen is, I have seen a lot of the marble back splash lately and I really like how the counter top is continued into the back splash. It's clean and the movement in the marble keeps it interesting. I have been a fan of these Hudson Valley lights for a long time. The pendants are very popular, I like how they used the flush mounts to give a nice wash of light in the room and used the pendents as ascetic. It's more common to use can lighting and pendants, but I really like the flush mounts.

This is the Rosecliff Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. Again such breath taking beauty, this is one of the more romantic mansion. It is popular for weddings and anniversary celebrations, notice the heart shaped stair case! The Great Gatsby was filmed here in 1970's, the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is one of my favorites, and I loved the movie just as much. It's impossible not to be inspired by the stunning architecture and the elaborate interiors then to top it all off the property looks out to one of the most stunning views of the water I have ever seen!

The Breakers, Newport, Rhode Island

When I was at school in Rhode Island, one of my favorite things to do on the weekend was go to Newport and walk along the cliff and look at all the beautiful mansions. One of the most famous is the the Breakers mansion, as seen above. I am always in awe of the beautifully decorated ceilings and the massive chandeliers that hang from them. I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a place like that, the music room alone is 2400 sq. feet! I could spend hours there looking at all the details and feeling inspired by it's magnificent beauty!

Access has come out with a great LED wall washer outdoor fixture. We just put this one up in the showroom and everyone has been saying how much they like it, with such an impact in the showroom I thought I would post it here so you can view it online. Although I don't think this picture does it Justice, it is much better in person. It gives off a great light, each bulb is 3 watts, and LED does really well outside especially in the cold! I love how small it is, 5" diameter, and very low profile it only extends from the wall 3" this could be used almost anywhere.
